A host is a host?

Part II of our educational series “The Secret Life of Websites” is all about hosting. Last month we wrote about getting/buying/keeping a domain name. (Need a refresher? See it here.) Now, who will host your website?  While LW Creative Group offers hosting services in addition to website design, we want you to be informed about hosting options. We think LWCG is the best choice to host your website, but make your own decision – here’s what you need to know:

1. Every live website is hosted on a server run by companies such as GoDaddy, HostGator, and many more.  Some hosting services are good, some not so good. You can research hosts yourself or ask a friendly, experienced web designer like us :-)

2. If you have a website and don’t know who is hosting it, go to http://www.whoishostingthis.com and enter your domain name.  For example, our domain name is LWCreative.com, our host is SiteGround.

3. Hosting doesn’t have to be expensive. It is charged by the month, generally one year in advance. Basic hosting should be $15-$20/month, more if you are using services like website updating, e-commerce, or you are charged monthly for email services. If you’re paying more than $240 annually with no additional services –  time to re-evaluate.

4. You need to know how often your hosting company backs up your website and database.  Good companies back up your website daily, some don’t back up your site at all –  know your liability.

5. Email can go through your hosted website at no additional monthly cost. Some hosting companies charge for that, we do not.  A webmaster can add as many emails as you need (i.e. Lois@lwcreative.com) for free.

6. Don’t lose your hosting username and password. Keep it in a safe place that you will remember.

Websites can be confusing, but it’s what we do for a living.  We can deal with your domain name, hosting, and website troubleshooting issues so you can focus on what YOU do best. We can be your expert to deal with your web presence and those pesky, yet oh-so-important details.

A host is a host.  It’s what lies beneath that really counts…

Be careful out there!   :-)
